One-on-One Onsite Tutoring

The NLV Learning Center, created and managed by our founder, Sister Claire, with the assistance of Sister Aline, is open to elementary school children who benefit from one-on-one tutoring by dedicated volunteers.  Each child meets with the same volunteer twice weekly for 60-90 minutes.  The focus is on improving skills in reading and math.  Two additional volunteers meet with the children once weekly for spelling and for the learning and practice of multiplication tables and addition combinations.  Each child has the use of a Lenovo tablet and of the computers set up in the learning center.  The IXL/math program is used as are different reading programs, depending on each child’s level of learning.  The children earn “bonus bucks” to select prizes of their choice; the daily reward for staying on task is the 15 minutes at the end of the learning session to play games on the tablets.  Although the learning center operates after a full day of school, most children love coming to the NLV Learning Center—where they are met at their own level and are not in competition with any other child.
